For the budget traveler, this purchase requires careful thought. If you decide to skip the main ticket, you can still access many of the most sacred and visually impressive sites which are treated as active places of worship and are either free or require a small, separate donation fee.

Cheaper Alternative: Maximizing the Free and Low Cost Sites

If the main ticket is not in your budget, focus your itinerary on these essential, low cost sites:

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi (Free/Small Donation): The oldest documented tree in the world is freely accessible as a sacred shrine. A small donation is often requested, but there is no mandatory fee. This is a must see.

Ruwanwelisaya Stupa (Free): The magnificent White Stupa is one of the most powerful places of worship and is completely free for visitors.

• Day 1 (Sacred Sites): Cycle the perimeter of the Ancient City. Start at Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, visit Ruwanwelisaya, and then cycle past the Abhayagiri/Jetavanaramaya (viewing them from outside the ticketed perimeter). End the day exploring the Tissa Wewa tank area for sunset.
• Day 2 (Mihintale and Art): Take the morning bus to Mihintale. Spend 4 to 5 hours there. Return, and in the late afternoon, visit Isurumuniya Temple.
